FIGURE 3 Tourniquet application pressures and tightening-system use.
(A) (B)
(C) (D)
Each X8T application is shown with a circle; the whiskers extend from minimum to maximum; the boxes extend from 25th percentile to 75th
percentile (bound the IQR); and the medians are inside the boxes and sometimes obscured by the circles. Data for arm applications are green, for
thigh are blue. Data for applications that required additional tightening after 1st completion are shown in the left half of each panel, and data for
those without additional tightening are in the right half of each panel. Arm data from subjects requiring additional clicks after 1st completion are
connected by dashed lines and have the same color coding in the pressures graph (n=19, 21 arms were too small for pressure measuring including
two that required additional clicks) and clicks graph (n=40). Thigh data from three subjects requiring more than one additional click after 1st
completion are connected by dashed lines and have the same color coding in the pressures graph (n=40) and clicks graph (n=40). The arm dashed
line data points are from different subjects than the thigh dashed line data points. All P values ≤.2 are reported. Arm pre-tightening-system-use
pressures were higher than thigh (P<.0001); thigh occlusion, completion, and pre-release pressures were higher than arm (P<.0001). Thigh appli-
cations involved more clicks than arm (P<.0001), and more thigh applications needed additional clicks after first completion than arm (P<.0001).
(A) Arm application pressures. Medians: pre-tightening-system use 197mmHg, occlusion 298mmHg, 1st completion 338mmHg, pre-release
304mmHg. (B) Arm application clicks. Medians: occlusion 5 clicks, 1st completion 6 clicks, pre-release 7 clicks. (C) Thigh application pressures.
Medians: pre-tightening-system use 122mmHg, occlusion 359mmHg, 1st completion 393mmHg, pre-release 367mmHg. (D) Thigh application
clicks. Combined medians: occlusion 13 clicks, 1st completion 14 clicks, pre-release 15 clicks.
