Indications:
• Tuberculosis
• Anthrax
• Brucellosis
• Asymptomatic carriers of Neisseria meningitidis to eliminate meningococci from the
nasopharynx
• MRSA soft tissue infections
Dose: 600mg PO bid
Contraindications: Liver dysfunction
Pregnancy Category C
Side-effects/precautions:
• Hepatotoxic
° Hepatitis
° Jaundice
° Liver failure in severe cases

° Flushing
° Pruritus
° Rash
° Redness and watering of eyes
• Abdominal
° Nausea
° Vomiting
° Abdominal cramps
° Diarrhea
° Jaundice
° Flatulence
Warnings:
• Concomitant antacid administration may reduce the absorption of rifampin. Daily doses
of rifampin should be given at least 1 hour before the ingestion of antacids.
• Rifampin and its metabolites may impart a red-orange color to urine, feces, sputum,
sweat and tears; soft contact lenses worn during rifampin therapy may become perma-
nently stained
