In 1982, Christensen was a young Western-trained anesthetist
who was part of an International Committee of the Red Cross
(ICRC) surgical team asked to provide relief for the Pakistan
Red Crescent. The team set up the ICRC Hospital for Afghan
War Wounded in Peshawar on the border to Afghanistan, and
the author provides his experiences in “Medicine on the Edge
of Darkness.” An “Introduction” is provided by Hetzler.
