DCS Type I (musculoskeletal):
Type I decompression sickness includes joint pain (musculoskeletal or pain-only symptoms) and
symptoms involving the skin (cutaneous symptoms), or swelling and pain in lymph nodes.
DCS Type II (nervous system):
Type II DCS symptoms are divided into three categories:
1. Neurological
2. Inner Ear (staggers)
3. Cardiopulmonary (chokes)
CAUTION: Chokes in the presence of DCS is a rare but grave sign. Most commonly seen in
aviators from rapid decompression or from emergency ascents during saturation dives.
Treatment (DCS):
1. ABCs/High flow O2/IV NS/LR KVO; Begin resuscitation if required.
2. 100% O2 (or highest % available) via tight fitting aviator’s mask with a demand valve.
3. Perform a complete neurological exam.
4. Evacuate ASAP for recompression.
