haps for USAF Pararescuemen (PJs). This revised handbook
includes an outline of the principles of PJ medicine and the pa-
tient assessment checklist. This approach to patients is slightly
modified from traditional primary and secondary surveys to
reflect both a more efficient and a comprehensive approach to
combat trauma based on PJ experience and data from overseas
contingency operations. Portions of the Tactical Combat Ca-
sualty Care (TCCC) guidelines and the ATP Tactical Medical
Emergency Protocols (TMEPS) that pertain to pararescue are
included and have been modified to suit the PJ mission. The
goal remains to have all PJs work to a single standard. The
section on prolonged care has been modified and expanded
based on PJ experiences. It is currently available on our JSOM
Online Store, https://jsom.us/PJMed along with the Advanced
Tactical Paramedic Protocols (ATP-P) Handbook. Coming
in the near future, we will have the USAF Independent Duty
Medical Technician Medical and Dental Treatment Protocols
Handbook and the Army MEDEVAC Standard Medical Op-
erating Guidelines Handbook available as well.
There still seems to be confusion as to SOMA membership and
the receipt of the JSOM versus conference attendance only. We
are the Official Journal for SOMA; if you joined SOMA as a
“member,” you will receive the JSOM as part of your mem-
bership. If you’re not sure if you are an actual member versus
a SOMSA attendee, please contact SOMA directly at SOMA@
kellencompany.com. Also, please note that unlike “JSOM
subscriptions” that auto-renew (unless you specify otherwise)
every 365 days, the SOMA membership cycle is from the day
you join until 31 December of that year. Therefore, if you do
JSOM medical editor, COL Dan Godbee, and publisher, Michelle Landers, not renew your SOMA membership by 1 February (the day
at SOMSA 2019.
we finalize the JSOM Spring Edition mailing list), you will not
receive the Spring Edition of JSOM from SOMA.
